With Democrats having a solid vet0-proof majority in the General Assembly, the state’s voters might be better served by electing another Republican to succeed two-term incumbent Gov. Larry Hogan next year, according to state Commerce Secretary and GOP gubernatorial candidate Kelly Schulz.
Gansler emphasized that he has proven progressive bonafides, such as having been an early supporter of same-sex marriage and having embraced police reform before it was fashionable. However, Gansler noted that the nomination does not always go to the candidate who is most ideologically pure.

“Our efforts to vaccinate the 5 to 11 year olds is off to a good start. Since last Thursday afternoon, less than a week ago, the county Health and Human Services department has vaccinated over 9,500 children,” Elrich said at a virtual news conference.
Schulz, 52, served as state labor secretary from 2015-2019, when she was succeeded by Tiffany Robinson. That means that Schulz was no longer in charge of the state’s UI program when the pandemic began and the program attracted widespread criticism for being so badly mismanaged compared with that of other states in the nation that the General Assembly convened a series of oversight hearings.
Schulz’s opposition to vaccine mandates seemingly conforms with standard Republican orthodoxy but is in stark contrast with that of several of the nine Democrats running for governor.
AFSCME (American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees) Council 3 and Council 67 endorsed former Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez last week. Unions have been a crucial part of the Democratic coalition since Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal in the 1930s.
