The top news is, of course, the death of former Baltimore Mayor and Maryland Governor and Comptroller William Donald Schaefer. Our compilation presents a veritable history lesson in the life of one of Maryland’s most important and colorful politicians. People, from public officials to private citizens, recall the transformation that Schaefer made to Baltimore city and his love for his hometown. Politicians also remember the tough time he had as governor. But he is likely to be remembered most for his larger-than-life personality that inevitably rubbed some people the wrong way while earning the admiration of others. William Donald Schaefer – city councilman, mayor, governor, comptroller — was a man we journalists loved to hate, and he returned the grudging respect in kind.

He used us for his higher purposes, and reporters used him with all his strengths and flaws for some of the most flamboyant head-shaking stories we will ever remember.
