IT'S THE ECONOMY: Both Gov. Martin O'Malley and former Gov. Bob Ehrlich have focused much of their campaign on fixing the economy, the issue that most Marylanders find far and away to be the most important, reports The Sun's Annie Liskey. Ehrlich shared his views at...

Governors’ judicial appointments have lasting impact

With terms ranging from 10 to 15 years – and then the potential of staying on the bench for several terms after that – the judges a governor selects could make a lasting impression on the state and its laws.

For all of the state’s courts, a nominating commission vets people who apply to be judges. The top picks are presented to the governor, who does his own investigation and makes his selection. For circuit court judges, the governor’s selection is checked by putting those judges — plus other attorneys interested in the position — on the ballot after at least a year of service for the people to vote on.

Balto. County executive race: Kamenetz, Holt differ sharply at forum

The race for Baltimore County Executive ended with a bang as Democrat Kevin Kamenetz and Republican Kenneth Holt sharply contrasted their positions at a forum Wednesday evening.

The candidates had a few sharp exchanges as they participated in the event’s question-and-answer format. Held at Stevenson University’s Greenspring campus, many in the standing room-only audience showed their preference by wearing candidates’ T-shirts, including candidates who’d been defeated in the primary election.

Accessing financial disclosures not easy

Today, MarylandReporter.com is publishing online the 2009 financial disclosure records for the 13 statewide candidates who appear on the General Election ballot – not an easy task to pull off.

Every candidate for office and every elected official must file an annual financial disclosure, which details sources of income, property, stock and corporate holdings. Disclosures also list debts, corporate and financial interests of immediate family members, and gifts received.

Comptroller’s race: Campbell says he’d be a better financial watchdog than Franchot

A new $87 million computer system has nearly paid for itself in tracking down delinquent taxpayers, says Democratic Comptroller Peter Franchot. But Republican challenger William Campbell says the Maryland Integrated Tax System is destined to cost almost three times as much – a claim a Franchot aide called untrue — and also raises privacy concerns as it interfaces with other state databases.

Analysis: Republicans fight to hold Senate seat on the Lower Shore

In an election where the Republican Party hopes to claim enough seats in the Maryland Senate to sustain a filibuster and force negotiations on bills requiring a two-thirds majority, not losing traditionally held seats is as important as gaining them.

That makes the District 38 race on the lower Eastern Shore between Republican hotel executive Michael James and Democratic Del. Jim Mathias such a critical one to both parties.

FINANCE REPORTS: Gov. Martin O'Malley ponied up about $10,000 for a campaign trail recreational vehicle and $1,189 for Amtrak trips. Former Gov. Bob Ehrlich doled out about $20,000 for a fashion show that doubled as a fundraiser and $3,000 for helicopter travel, all...
