UPDATE Goners: 10 senators, 29 delegates leave their seats this year

UPDATE: This is the last legislative session for 10 senators and 29 delegates as they leave their seats to others, whether by retiring or running for other offices. (CORRECTION: We missed two delegates in the first go-around. Thanks to the Greater Baltimore Committee’s Don Fry for the correction.)

Primary and general elections may unseat other lawmakers, but here is the list of the lawmakers that will produce at least a 20% turnover in both chambers.

Senators

  • Ed Kasemeyer, D, Howard-Baltimore District 12, retiring after five terms.
  • Rich Madaleno, D-Montgomery, District 18, running for governor.
  • Roger Manno, D-Montgomery, District 19, running for U.S. House, 6th Congressional District
  • Ulysses Currie, D-Prince George’s, retiring after six terms.
  • Anthony Muse, D-Prince George’s, District 26, running for county executive.
  • John Astle, D-Anne Arundel, District 30, retiring after six terms.
  • James Ed DeGrange, D-Anne Arundel, District 32, retiring after five terms.
  • Jim Brochin, D-Baltimore County, District 42, running for county executive.
  • Victor Ramirez, D-Prince George’s, running for state’s attorney.
  • Linda Norman, R-Harford-Cecil, District 35, replaced her late husband, Sen. Wayne Norman

  • Mary Beth Carozza, R-Wicomico-Worcester, running for state Senate
  • Charles Barkley, D-Montgomery, District 39, running for county council.

  • ADDED Sue Aumann,R-Baltimore County-District 42B, retiring after four terms.

According to a Department of Legislative Services report for the General Assembly Compensation Commission (page 74), state Senate turnover in an election year has averaged about 21%, and the House turnover has ranged from 21% to 41% in 2014, its highest number in 20 years.

In 2014, 12 delegates ran for Senate and 7 were elected. This year, 11 delegates are running for Senate. Two-thirds of the Senate at this time has served as delegates.
