Slots vote close in Anne Arundel, poll finds, but Leopold is way ahead

Anne Arundel County voters are closely divided on whether to put the state’s largest slots casino at the Arundel Mills mall, with 48% supporting ballot Question A to approve zoning for the site and 45% opposed, according to a new poll. Another 7% were undecided.

The results are within the 5 point margin of error for the poll of 405 likely Anne Arundel County voters conducted last week by Gonzales Research and Marketing Strategies of Annapolis.

Companies suffer from transportation problems

Stuart FitzGibbons, manager of the Domino Sugar Refinery with the signature sign on its plant in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, told the Blue Ribbon Commission on Transportation Funding on Monday that he constantly worries about transportation.

He worries that the harbor will not maintain dredging so his ships will be able to get out. He worries about public transportation for his employees to get to work. The refinery initially was located in central Baltimore because potential employees could live nearby, he said. Now people tend to live out toward the suburbs.

Baltimore County Republicans take pledge on pension reform

Republican candidates for Baltimore County and state offices pledged Monday to support legislation that would change the pension system for all elected officials in the state.

Led by state’s attorney hopeful Steve Bailey, the group of about 20 candidates vowed to support legislation that would move elected officials out of the current defined benefit pension plan and into a 401(k) retirement savings plan.

O’Malley continues to lead Ehrlich in latest poll, 47% to 42%, with few undecided

Democratic Gov. Martin O’Malley leads Republican ex-gov. Bob Ehrlich 47% to 42%, with only 6% of the electorate undecided, according to a Gonzales Research poll taken last week. Four percent will vote for one of the three minor-party candidates.

The poll of 816 likely voters interviewed by telephone last week is the latest survey in the past month to show O’Malley pulling ahead in the race, despite the fact that Gonzales expects Republican voter turnout to be higher than usual and Democrats to turn out in fewer numbers. The margin of error is 3.5%.

Analysis: Debate comes up short again on policy proposals

If elected again as Maryland’s governor, Bob Ehrlich would eliminate traditional pensions for new state employees and give them defined contribution plans like the 401(k)s that dominate the corporate world.

That’s one teensy bit of news – as in something you’ve never heard before – that came out of the second televised debate between the Republican ex-governor and incumbent Democrat Martin O’Malley.

Task force looks for ways to simplify contracts with nonprofits and save money

A legislative task force is seeking to make it easier for Maryland nonprofits to contract with the state, as well as save money for the state and for the health and social service providers it hires.

Two new national reports out this month say that problems are common with state and federal procurement of services throughout the country. One report called complicated and archaic procurement procedures “a silent national crisis” for hard-pressed nonprofits stressed by the recession.
