State Roundup April 28, 2010

O’MALLEY: Gov. Martin O’Malley launched his re-election campaign in Fells Point and then began a tour around the state Tuesday. MarylandReporter.com’s Andy Rosen has an analysis of what it’ll take for him to keep his job. O’Malley suggested that former Gov. Bob Ehrlich would take Maryland backward, and asked how his challenger would pay for a proposal to roll the state sales tax back to 5 percent, Michael Dresser writes in The Baltimore Sun.

Aaron Davis has the story for The Washington Post, and John Wagner writes that Ehrlich stayed out of sight as O’Malley’s campaign began. An editorial in The Sun hypes up the coming clash between O’Malley and Ehrlich, but hopes that there will be real discussion of issues facing the state.

Here’s video on the announcement from Adam May at WJZ, who uses AP copy to fill out his story. Dave Collins has the report for WBAL TV. Here’s John Rydell’s take for Fox 45. Tom LoBianco covers the announcement for WYPR, as does WBAL Radio’s Rob Lang, who again points to a poll that shows a tighter race.

NORTHROP GRUMMAN: Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell said his state’s business-friendly government and quality of life are what swayed Northrop Grumman to choose Northern Virginia as its headquarters, Jeff Clabaugh writes in the Washington Business Journal. McDonnell said the defense contractor will receive $12 million to $14 million in incentives.

But Northrop Grumman officials and Maryland’s top economic development official said the decision to move to Virginia was based on real estate, not a supposedly unfriendly business climate, Ryan Sharrow reports in the Baltimore Business Journal. Northrop officials said Maryland’s offer in incentives was “very competitive” to Virignia’s, but that Northern Virginia had a better selection of buildings compared to Montgomery County.

CAMPAIGN: Tom LoBianco has a roundup of area blogs on his site as the campaign kicks into gear, including a conservative take on O’Malley and a labor view of Ehrlich.

HELLER: Erich Wagner continues MarylandReporter.com’s series on retiring legislators, talking with Del. Hank Heller about his time in the General Assembly.

IMMIGRATION: Del. Pat McDonough, a Republican foe of illegal immigration, wants to introduce a bill next year to mirror Arizona’s tough new immigration law. Christian Schaffer has the story for WMAR.

FORECLOSURES: Maryland has the 14th-highest rate of foreclosures in the country, and the number has risen, according to this video report from Fox 45. There are about 150,000 people behind on their mortgages in the state.

ROUGH ROADS: Maryland drivers pay an extra $425 in vehicle costs because of rough roads, compared to the $335 national average, Liz Kay writes in The Sun.

SAME-SEX MARRIAGE: Capital News Service’s Shauna Miller looks at how the recognition of out-of-state same-sex marriages meshes — or doesn’t — with federal law, which doesn’t recognize same-sex marriages at all.
