Our ninth monthly roundup of candidates for General Assembly shows the various groups that have endorsed in these races, 10 groups so far. It also adds any campaign finance information that has changed in the past month.

We felt the endorsements were the best and simplest way to add value to our list. These groups generally have bombarded the candidates with questionnaires, and several conduct interviews. Their endorsements are a short hand way to assess the credibility and positions of the candidates.

Some of the endorsements bring with them money and volunteers, in addition to the support of the members of the group.

This is particularly true of one of the most sought after endorsements, that of the Maryland State Education Association, the teachers union. Getting on the Apple ballot is treasured by Democrats, and the union just launched an interactive ballot where voters can put in their address and find all the MSEA candidates on their ballot. Other union endorsements also bring money and manpower.

Business groups MIA

Unfortunately missing from the list of endorsers are any business groups and virtually no conservative groups except for Maryland Right to Life. Many business groups have political action committees that contribute to campaigns, but few if any formally endorse a slate of candidates. Maryland Business for Responsive Government, for instance, rates incumbents’ voting records but it does not endorse, nor does the Maryland Chamber of Commerce.

The National Federation of Independent Business does endorse, but they have not completed that process. We hope to add those endorsements next month, along with any other groups that we may have missed. Please send potential additions to the list to Len@MarylandReporter.com.

Groups who complain about the business climate in Maryland might want to consider publicizing their support for favored candidates.

As we did last month, we include campaign fundraising totals from 2013 filed with the State Board of Elections in January, and any new information that has been filed.

We have tried to list every candidate who has filed or filed and withdrawn. We have added figures for Cash on hand, amount Raised in 2013, and Loans or Debts when significant.

Each district is listed by county and, in most cases, incumbents (in parentheses) with their status.

The districts reflect new district lines, which have placed some incumbents into a different district. Each legislative district has one senator and three delegates, often split into subdistricts of one or two delegates. Many of the subdistricts were changed in the last redistricting, and voters are often finding out about this for the first time.

With more than 540 candidates and incumbents and so many fundraising numbers and endorsements, there are likely to be some omissions and errors. Please email any needed corrections to Len Lazarick, Len@MarylandReporter.com.

Some unopposed and many not returning

Seven incumbent state senators have no opposition in either the primary or the general election, but only one delegate and one candidate for delegate face no opponent. Forty-three (43) current members of the Senate and House of Delegates will not be returning to their seats; 23 are running for other offices; 20 are retiring.

All of these are listed by district below, but here are lists that group them together.
