State Roundup, April 5, 2013

Gay marriage, in-state tuition and drivers licenses for some undocumented immigrants, gun control … over the past two years, Maryland had taken a marked turn to the progressive side of the political spectrum; after days of debate, the General Assembly passes one of the nation’s toughest gun control bills, which includes fingerprinting, licensing and bullet magazine limits; needless to say, not everyone is happy and the rumors about petitioning the law to referendum begin; Gov. O’Malley to get bill aimed at protecting pregnant workers; anti-cyber-bullying bill passes both houses unanimously; union fee requirement for non-union public school workers heads to O’Malley’s desk; salvation for TU baseball turned on its head after strong opposition; and U.S. Rep. Edwards, staff take pay cut.

Mental health advocates outraged by lack of state funding for psychiatric care, cuts in governor’s budget

Despite general agreement on the need for more mental health services to prevent gun violence, providers argue that the state’s psychiatric services are woefully underfunded and that the General Assembly has done little to address this problem. They were particularly shocked that the governor revoked $7.2 million of funding for mental health in his supplemental budget this week.
