While some machine learning models predicting suicidal behavior rely on electronic health records, researchers believe labeling suicide as a mental health issue simplifies a complex topic. Craig Bryan, a psychologist at the Ohio State University College of Medicine cited in Resnik’s research, argues outside factors such as decision-making skills, financial troubles and access to lethal weapons play just as significant a role as psychiatric disorders.

The program runs on funds from the state’s Behavioral Health Administration, the Health Resources and Services Administration as well as grants from the federal government. That allows the program to offer its services with no charge to its patients or their insurance, thereby steering clear of problems that may otherwise arise regarding insurance coverage.

The issue is, that many of those seeking similar help today are far younger than he was.
Nearly one in five Maryland high school students have gambled in the past year, according to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. In Garrett and Queen Anne’s counties, that rate is close to one in four.
