Gov. Larry Hogan signed more than 220 bills passed by the General Assembly into law on Tuesday, including measures that repeal Maryland’s pro-Confederate state song, legalize sports betting, and extend authorization for off-the-premises alcohol delivery for two years.

The legislature has another chance to repeal Maryland’s Confederate state song “Maryland, My Maryland” this session. It must take action to finally stop honoring the Lost Cause and send a strong message that all are welcome in Maryland.

Former Lt. Gov. Michael Steele said the lyrics to Maryland’s state song should be changed.
“I’d love to keep the theme. I love the theme music. But the lyrics should be more reflective-not just of these times but more reflective of who we are how we see ourselves as Marylanders. And what does it mean to be a Marylander? And what does it mean to be a part of the United States,” Steele told MarylandReporter.com in a phone interview on Friday.
