Road trips are a joyful and exciting way to explore new places and create unforgettable memories together with your friends and family. However, before you set off on your journey, it is essential to make sure your vehicle is in proper condition in order to ensure a safe and enjoyable journey. Unprepared vehicles can lead to unexpected breakdowns and other problems that can ruin a trip. That’s why we’ve prepared an 8-step guide which you can use whenever you want to get your car ready for a long journey.

1. Tire inspection

Carefully check the tread depth and overall condition of the tires. Keep them properly inflated and free from visible damage. Having the tires properly inflated is key for maintaining good traction and steering, but also for improving fuel efficiency. However, if you are unsure of the maximum pressure required for your vehicle, refer to the owner’s manual or read a sticker on the driver’s door jamb or inside the glove box. Nevertheless, in case of low tread depth or worn tires, you should rotate or replace them before setting off.

2. Inspect the fluids

Before starting the engine, check the level of all important fluids such as coolant, transmission fluid, power steering fluid and windshield wiper fluid. Always make sure their levels are correct and top up if necessary.

However, it’s worth mentioning that no one is immune to breakdowns while driving, in such cases it’s worth making sure there are car service stations in the new area beforehand. In case of a breakdown, always seek advice only from a professional mechanic to avoid even bigger problems. After a long and demanding trip, you might also need to drop into the service center to clean your car from all the dirt and grime. This way you can take advantage of car detailing in Dubai. The car repair specialists will help you get your car looking its best in the shortest possible time.

 3. Check the oil level

Make sure that the oil level is maintained at the correct grade. However, if the oil is dirty or low, it is probably time for a change. Regular oil changes are vital for keeping your car’s engine running smoothly, as the oil helps lubricate moving parts and keep them functioning properly. Generally, it is recommended that you change your oil at least every 3-6 months, depending on the type of oil you use as well as the manufacturer’s recommendations.

4. Check the brakes

Brakes are one of the most crucial components of a car and their function is vital for your safety, therefore never neglect a brake check. Start by testing them out yourself: depress the brake pedal and listen to any unusual noises or vibrations. If the brakes make strange noises or the pedal seems spongy or difficult to depress, it could be a sign that the brakes need a mechanic’s check.

5. Checking the battery

Having a dead battery can be very inconvenient, especially if you are going on a long journey to a remote area. Test the battery by using a voltmeter or tester to measure the voltage. Fully charged battery voltage should be around 12 volts.

6. Inspect car belts and hoses

Belts and hoses are responsible for moving fluids and energy around the vehicle and if they fail they can cause serious problems. For example, a torn timing belt can cause the engine to stop, and a leaking radiator hose can cause the engine to overheat. Have all worn or damaged parts replaced.

7. Inspect the lighting

In addition, an essential part of the car check up is examining the lighting system including headlights, tail lights, brake lights and direction indicators to make sure they are all functioning correctly.

8. Assemble an emergency kit

Assemble a set of basic items and tools that may be needed in the event of an emergency on the road. This may include items such as a spare wheel, a jack, a crescent wrench, a torch and a first aid kit.

Following these 8 steps before your journey can ensure that your vehicle is maintained and ready for the trip ahead. Don’t forget to plan your check up beforehand, take all necessary documents and pack any personal belongings. Have a great trip and enjoy the ride!
