State Roundup, April 4, 2013

Despite a barrage of amendment proposals, Maryland’s House of Delegates votes 78-61 to pass one of the toughest gun laws in the nation. The measure bans the sale of assault-type weapons and limits bullet magazines to 10 rounds. The bill now heads to the Senate; meanwhile, Del. Dwyer calls on Marylanders to form a volunteer militia; the legislature is also on the verge of passing comprehensive campaign finance reform; fixing the state’s speed camera systems is the subject of another bill set to pass; county executive takeover of Prince George’s school chief hiring closer to approval; and Towson University sports “bailout” blasted.

Gun control debate shows divide between two cultures

The debate and vote on a sweeping new gun control measure that establishes a stringent licensing regime for handguns reflected a sharp split between two different cultures in Maryland. One shuns guns as instruments of violence and the other embraces them as essential to freedom and safety.
