Janet Owens wont run again for Anne Arundel County executive

Janet Owens won’t be running again for Anne Arundel County executive after months of exploring the race, Owens told MarylandReporter.com Wednesday.

“I feel somewhat ambivalent about it,” said Owens, who served two terms in the post. “I have a happy life. I would have to give that up” and run what would need to be a bruising, “factually negative” campaign against Republican incumbent John Leopold.

Dems hope to capture open GOP Senate seat on the Lower Shore

Maryland Senate candidate Michael James held a steamy fundraiser last week at the Atlantic Hotel featuring former first lady Kendel Ehrlich. James is running for the District 38 seat, a traditionally Republican stronghold thrown into play upon Lowell Stoltzfus’ retirement after 18 years of service.

Democrat Del. Jim Mathias, the former Ocean City mayor who is James’ expected rival for the seat, had his own fundraiser three nights later at Seacrets, an Ocean City landmark as prominent for its liberal atmosphere as the old Atlantic Hotel is for its conservative tone.

The warring camps in the battle for the State House are seeking to “nationalize” the race.

Ex-Gov. Bob Ehrlich’s forces are hoping to lash Democratic Gov. Martin O’Malley to an increasingly unpopular president, and O’Malley’s troops are tying Republican Ehrlich to Big Oil, the Gulf spill, Big Tobacco and even the bailout of big banks.
