Just 33 days from the primary election and 20 days from early voting, the campaign mailers are beginning to hit the mailboxes of regular primary voters. Some contain the usual puffery and exaggeration of records.
One on behalf of Sen. Ulysses Currie by Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown seems to stretch the legislative record like a rubber band.

Members of the Maryland General Assembly are required to file conflict of interest forms if they think their personal financial interests may conflict with issues they are supposed to vote on. Behind closed doors, members of the General Assembly’s Joint Committee on Legislative Ethics presumably spent an hour Thursday morning talking about Sen. Ulysses Currie. As the 12 committee members left the conference room where the morning meeting took place, however, they would not even confirm that much.

The not guilty verdict in the corruption trial of state Sen. Ulysses Currie clearly shows how we State House reporters have been wasting our time checking financial disclosure statements. I did look at Currie’s forms some years, and would not have found anything. He never disclosed his long relationship with Shopper’s Food Warehouse, and his punishment for that has been absolutely nothing — except a year of embarrassment.
