Anne Arundel executive plans to maintain fast pace of change
Steve Schuh was gung ho when he took office as Anne Arundel County executive 13 months ago, and he thinks he’s made a good start implementing his campaign promises and transforming county government. In an interview in his Annapolis office last month, he said he’s not planning to slow the pace of change. Two major consultant reports are due out soon. One will call for a major revamping of land use, licensing and permits and the other will recommend overhauling the procurement process that Schuh describes as “notoriously inefficient” and “wasteful.”

Republican legislators take control of three county governments
Republican members of the Maryland legislature took office Monday as the new county executives of three large suburban counties, but for Harford and Anne Arundel counties GOP dominance is becoming a routine event, while in Howard it was just the second time a Republican became executive.
The difference was evident in the inaugural ceremonies of the three counties.

Maryland Republicans made historic gains in Tuesday’s election. Larry Hogan Jr. became just the third Republican elected governor in the past 50 years, winning by almost the same 51.5% margin and carrying almost the same number of counties as Gov. Bob Ehrlich, the last Republican chief executive 12 years ago. Sen. Allan Kittleman became just the second Republican Howard County executive in its history, and Del. Steve Schuh, as expected, kept the Anne Arundel County executive office in GOP hands. On the Lower Shore, Bob Culver defeated Democrat Richard Pollitt, the first Wicomico County executive.
