The Senate Finance Committee voted 17-10 Tuesday to advance to the full Senate the nomination of former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley to be the next commissioner of the Social Security Administration.

Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley told senators Thursday that if he is confirmed as the new commissioner of the Social Security Administration, he would focus on improving service and boosting the morale of the sprawling agency.

Gov. Martin O’Malley probably received the top item on his Christmas list this year on Election Day, but constituents and well-wishers from around the globe are sure to be sending holiday gifts toward Government House to fill in the space under the tree.
As governor of Maryland, O’Malley receives hundreds of gifts each year. According to records from the governor’s office, in 2009, he received 196 gifts. No totals are available for 2010 yet, but O’Malley spokesman Shaun Adamec said that many gifts have come in for the governor so far – especially after the election.

Before beginning his second four-year term as Maryland governor, Martin O’Malley is taking some time out to listen to what some people have to say.
O’Malley held the first of five “Maryland Forward” forums on Monday in Gaithersburg at the National Institute for Standards and Technology campus.
