The Maryland Board of Public Works voted 3-0 on Wednesday to approve a $5.6 billion public-private partnership agreement for the Purple Line, a 16.2-mile, east-west light rail transit system with 21 stations between Bethesda and New Carrollton, giving Gregory Sanders “the best present he could have asked for.”

The state transportation secretary got an earful from Republican delegates on the Appropriations Committee Friday. The Republicans wanted to know how much transportation funding had really been diverted to other programs and questioned why more transportation money was spent on mass transit than on public roads this year.

A bill that would create a task force to study the creation of regional transit financing authorities met with little opposition in the House Ways and Means Committee on Wednesday. Proposed by Del. Mary-Dulany James, D-Harford, the bill comes after the recommendation last November by the Blue Ribbon Commission on Transportation Funding that a study be conducted to assess the potential revenue that could be generated from regional transit authorities.
