Maryland schools slip to No. 3 in Education Week report card

For the umpteenth time in his two terms as governor, on Wednesday Martin O’Malley again touted that Maryland’s public schools had been No. 1 in America for five years running from Education Week magazine. But Maryland’s schools slipped a notch in the Education Week report card released Thursday, tripping to third place behind Massachusetts and New Jersey.

For the third year in a row, Maryland public schools have again been ranked No. 1 in the nation by Education Week magazine.
Maryland’s K-12 system again achieved this top-of-the-class status with a B+ grade (87.6), edging out New York and Massachusetts with their B grades by 3 and 5 points, respectively.

Maryland public schools remain tops in the nation for the second year in a row, according to the latest report card by Education Week magazine, released Wednesday.
The state school system even moved up a notch to a B+ from last year’s B. With a score of 87.5, Maryland is 3.5 points ahead of its nearest competitor, New York, and a full five points ahead of Massachusetts, which it barely edged out last year.
Virginia schools are number 4 with a B-, moving down 1 point this year to 83.2. Maryland’s higher grade this year partly reflects big improvement in a section of the report card on “the teaching profession.”
