Governor Wes Moore
The State House
100 State Circle
Annapolis, Maryland 21401
Dear Governor Moore:
I am writing to you as a constituent and a 35-year resident of Maryland. I am one of those Marylanders who did not vote for you but you addressed in your inaugural speech on Jan. 18, 2023. You should recall that you explicitly stated that you are the governor for all Marylanders. You emphasized the importance of inclusivity and unity, asserting your commitment to serve every resident of Maryland, regardless of their background or political affiliation and you highlighted the need to work together to tackle the challenges facing the state and to ensure that all voices.
On Tuesday, you announced the formation of a redistricting taskforce led by Sen. Angela Alsobrooks to “… redraw Maryland’s eight congressional districts with an eye toward eliminating the last Republican district … despite staunch opposition from the Maryland Senate president, a fellow Democrat key to making it happen.”
It was only a week ago that we were told that Senate President Bill Ferguson, a fellow Democrat, threw cold water on the idea of redrawing the maps to favor your party. Democrats hold seven out of eight of Maryland’s U.S. House of Representatives seats. But you have been getting pressure from national Democrats to redraw the boundaries to create an 8-0 map.
And what did you do? You rolled right over and unlike the leader you profess to be and the pledge you made to all those Marylanders who did not vote for you … you ordered just the opposite action on redistricting. So, it is clear to me and all of those who did not vote for you that your words back in January of ’23 were meaningless and hollow. Like so many of your party you are moving to the left in a state that needs no further help to establish its one-party rule. But now you want to eliminate the only voice that over one million Marylanders have in the United States Congress. That is not what a leader for all does!
Your disappointments are epoch. Losing opportunities worth billions to neighboring Virginia, raising taxes to make up for billion-dollar budget shortfalls, rising crime rates especially violent crime, economic policies that have not brought down the cost of living in Maryland and a failure to expedite education reform across the state. That is the short list.
I urge you not to make our problems worse by gerrymandering out the last representation and voice Republicans and right leaning independents have in Congress. With two U.S. Senators and seven in the House of Representatives you already have a firm lock on Maryland’s “Blue” agenda. Take the advice of Senate President Bill Ferguson and focus on matters that are truly in the best interest of ALL Marylanders – that is what you promised and that is what a leader does!
Respectfully,
Marc King
