Journalists ask Obama to stop ‘politically driven suppression of news’ at federal agencies

The Society of Professional Journalists, the National Newspaper Association and 36 other journalism and open government groups sent a letter to President Obama Tuesday asking him to stop “politically driven suppression of news and information about federal agencies.”

For the second year in a row, Baltimore magazine has named MarylandReporter.com the best “political website.” Last month, the Washington, D.C. chapter of the Society of Professional Journalist named MarylandReporter.com the winner of its blog category in the chapter’s 2013 Dateline Awards for Excellence in Local Journalism.

MarylandReporter.com was honored Tuesday night by the Washington chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists for a package of stories that uncovered the failure of one state agency to spend $38 million on people with developmental disabilities, even while thousands waited for services.

The Washington, D.C., chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists honored MarylandReporter.com Tuesday night at its Dateline Awards banquet, giving the online news organization first and second place in its new “blog” category.
The awards were for work published online in 2009. MarylandReporter.com began publishing in October.
