It was the coolest Tawes Crab Feast in memory. The political-social event of the summer in Crisfield on the Lower Eastern Shore is usually a scorcher in the 90s, but Wednesday was in the low 80s with cool breezes off the bay and low humidity at least at the outset. There was a peculiar lack of candidates this year, perhaps due to the June 24 primary that eliminated many of them. Here’s a photo gallery of some of the folks who did show up.

The staff of the Maryland Association of Counties (MACo) and the Maryland Municipal League (MML), which represent local governments at the State House, would have to file as registered lobbyists and follow lobbying laws under a bill being considered in the House of Delegates.

The Maryland Municipal League representing 157 municipal government is marking its 75th anniversary. “Cities and towns provide basic grassroots meat and potatoes services,” said Scott Hancock, executive director of the Maryland Municipal League. But counties provide those services — like water and sewer, emergency responders, trash and recycling pickup, and parks and recreation — too. Their overlapping duties require a lot of give-and-take.
