A Dorchester County tourist attraction dedicated to preserving the legacy of Harriet Tubman on the Eastern Shore has drawn ire from a minority group contractor whose bid for the project was turned down. Contractor Gilford Corporation, which is owned by an African-American, found its bid rejected because it failed to meet standards of a federal program designed to assist minority businesses.Read More

Between 2007 and 2011, the most recent available data, Maryland’s nine Eastern Shore counties averaged a loss of 11% of its business establishments employing people. Statewide, the loss was much less, declining 5.7%.Since 2000, the state of Maryland has actually gained businesses by about 4%, but the Eastern Shore is lagging with a gain of less than 1%.Read More
Eastern Shore legislators say “inflexible” Environment Department hurting job growth
Lawmakers from the Eastern Shore clashed with the Secretary of the Environment Shari Wilson on Friday, calling her agency “inflexible” and a hindrance to job growth in farming and other industries in their area.
At a joint Eastern Shore delegation meeting with Wilson and Agriculture Secretary Buddy Hance, the senators and delegates said environmental regulations on chicken houses, stormwater and septic systems are slowing down or halting projects in their counties.Read More
