The state of Israel is the target of several bills in the legislature this year, One requires the Maryland pension fund to divest any holdings in Israel. Another seeks to punish nonprofits which contribute to Israel.

As an American Jew, veteran, and resident of Montgomery County for over 30 years this legislative move concerns me. Additionally, it has sparked significant debate, particularly within Jewish communities and among advocates for Israel. The concern arises from the implications of such legislation amid a broader context of increasing antisemitism locally, and it highlights several key reasons why Jewish communities across Maryland should be particularly vigilant about this issue.

Simply stated these bills are antisemitism in disguise. The bill’s critics argue that it seeks to silence legitimate criticism of Israel under the guise of protecting Jewish interests.

However, the distinction between criticism of Israel and antisemitism is crucial. The conflation of these two can serve to delegitimize legitimate discourse about Israeli policies while simultaneously fostering an environment where antisemitic sentiments can thrive. This is particularly concerning given the rise of movements that claim to advocate for Palestinian rights while perpetuating harmful stereotypes about Jews.

Antisemitism has deep historical roots, often manifesting in scapegoating and the delegitimization of Jewish identity and existence. In the context of this bill, the notion that any critique of Israel can be labeled as anti-Jewish sentiment is indicative of a troubling trend. Historically, such narratives have led to increased hostility towards Jewish communities, creating an atmosphere of fear and insecurity. The implications of these bills can thus be seen as part of a larger effort to marginalize Jewish voices and experiences.

We can see it in Montgomery County – rising antisemitic incidents. Reports indicate a significant rise in antisemitic incidents across Maryland, the United States and worldwide. In response to the increasing antisemitism and hate crimes more broadly, Gov. Wes Moore announced a commitment of $10 million to support faith-based organizations. This funding is aimed at enhancing security measures to protect against hate-motivated violence. The initiative reflects a recognition of the urgent need to safeguard vulnerable communities and underscores the state’s acknowledgment of the growing threats faced by Jewish institutions. The state has to spend $10M to secure facilities at a time it is facing a multi-billion-dollar structural budget deficit.

The bill’s implications extend beyond politics into the realm of Jewish identity itself. For many Jews, their connection to Israel is a vital aspect of their cultural and religious identity. By legislating against perceived antisemitic actions or statements, lawmakers risk eroding this connection and alienating Jews who feel that their voices are being silenced. The fear that expressing solidarity with Palestinians might lead to accusations of antisemitism creates a chilling effect that could further isolate Jewish individuals and communities.

In summary, the Maryland initiative raises significant concerns for Jewish communities, particularly in light of rising antisemitism and historical patterns of discrimination. The state Legislature needs to continue looking inside the state to identify and solve the problems that affect all Marylanders and leave international politics to our federal representative. Maryland would be better served.
