State publishes new rules for campaigning at transit stations

The state is proposing to relax its rules on political activity at transit stations, a move designed to help settle a three-year legal battle with the American Civil Liberties Union and ACORN that stemmed from the 2006 campaign.

The regulatory change, published for public comment on a state website, eliminates the requirement that groups get permits for “free speech activity” at Maryland Transit Administration facilities. The regulations apply to things like political organizing and demonstrations.

Flag Day: Banners are symbol of liberty their seamstresses hope to regain

From the State House to the courthouse, the Stars-and-Stripes flying this Flag Day morning and throughout the year may be a symbol of “liberty and justice for all.” But the women who sewed them lost their liberty a good while ago in Maryland’s justice system.

The flags flown by government agencies in Maryland are hand-stitched by the inmates of the Maryland Correctional Institution for Women in Jessup, women who expect their work will bring them closer to freedom .

Marylands sales force debates state competitiveness

The people who sell Maryland to the country and the world spent part of this week debating whether the Free State’s brand is competitive in today’s marketplace.

On the plus side, Maryland has a “great quality of life” and a highly educated workforce, said economist Anirban Basu. On the downside, it has high taxes and a perceived bad attitude toward business.
