While there is still no set launch date for mobile sports betting in Maryland, there is progress being made after months of stagnation. The application window for mobile sportsbook operators opened at the beginning of September and will be available until Oct. 21.
TwinSpires Sportsbook at Ocean Downs Casino in Berlin officially opened on Dec. 17, 2021, as the fourth retail sportsbook in Maryland. While the retail sportsbook is relatively new, Ocean Downs Casino has been around (to varying degrees of success) since 1947.
Although Maryland bettors are still waiting for the rollout of Maryland online sports betting, the silver lining is there are several retail sportsbooks spread across the state. BetMGM Sportsbook Maryland at MGM National Harbor is one of the six retail sportsbooks currently operating in the Old Line State.

Much to their dismay, Maryland bettors are still awaiting an official launch date for online sports betting. Although Maryland’s Sports Wagering Application Review Committee (SWARC) recently made progress concerning draft regulations and applications, the committee is still being held back by the incomplete disparity study.
On August 1, the Massachusetts Senate approved a sports betting bill and sent it to the Governor’s desk. With the governor expected to sign the bill into law, Massachusetts is on track to be one of the next legal sports betting markets. It could even launch sports betting before Maryland.
Maryland sports bettors who don’t want to visit one of the state’s five retail sportsbooks have been wondering what is holding back the launch of online sportsbooks. The first retail bets were placed in Maryland in December 2021 and sports fans are still waiting to be able to place wagers from their phones.
