A look at the two teams journey in this year’s UCL:

Group stages:

Both the clubs topped their respective groups. Bayern Munich absolutely decimated their opponents as they marched on through the group stages without dropping a single point. They scored 24 goals in the six group stage matches and conceded only 5. The Bavarian giants were looking a force to be reckoned with right from the off.

Paris Saint Germain had a commendable group stage too as they too topped their group without a defeat. They however, dropped points against Real Madrid when the game ended in a 2-2 stalemate. Not that anything came of it as both parties involved in that match proceeded through the group stages into the round of sixteen.

Round of sixteen:

Bayern faced Chelsea in the round of sixteen tie and as it often has been the case in the last few years, London clubs have been blown away by the German Champions ruthlessly. Bayern scored three without a reply in London and then four more in Munich. The tie ended in a seven-one aggregate humiliation for Chelsea. From this moment onwards, it became extremely apparent that Bayern are the ones to watch, along with a few other clubs. The second leg was hosted after the hiatus due to the pandemic ended in Munich.

The club from Paris faced Borussia Dortmund in the round of sixteen and things weren’t as one-sided as was the case with the German giants. Dortmund actually won the first leg 2-1 with teenage sensation Erling Braut Håland netting both the goals. PSG’s talisman Neymar Jr halved the deficit and left the tie to be decided in the second leg. The second leg was, however, won comprehensively by the Parisians who won by scoring two goals without reply. PSG progressed to the quarter-finals with a 3-1 aggregate win. The two legs were concluded before the break due to health and safety issues.

Quarter-Finals:

After the lengthy coronavirus caused a break to the footballing season, structural amendments were made to bring a swift, safe and just conclusion to the tournament. Bayern and PSG faced Barcelona and Atalanta respectively in quarter-finals.

Bayern humiliated Barcelona by inflicting an unthinkable 8-2 defeat upon the Catalan giants while PSG’s match played out to a very different tune. They fell behind in the first half and without Mbappe starting the game and Di Maria suspended from the tie, PSG wasn’t able to find the back of the Italian side’s net until the second-half injury time when they scored twice in three minutes to proceed to the semis.

Semifinals:

PSG defeated RB Leipzig with customary ease as they breezed past the German side with a 3-0 win. Bayern too, won quite comfortably against Lyon despite some early frightful moments in the game.

How did the finals look? Who to watch out for?

The German side is still being considered favorites by most and that’s understandable after the dominant performance against FC Barcelona but PSG is well and truly in the game. The investments brought into this club were for this particular reason and they’ll definitely look to avenge their repeated heartbreaks at this competition.

Neymar Jr and Mbappe are two of the most exciting players of the Paris based club while Marquinhos has been solid throughout the tournament in his new defensive midfielder role.

Bayern Munich has a goal scorer supreme in Robert Lewandowski, arguably the best footballer this season and certainly the highest scorer in this year’s champions league. Serge Gnabry has been in excellent form too as he scored two goals in the semi-finals and sits currently behind his team’s striker at the tournament’s top scorer list. Bayern’s young left-back Alphanso Davies has caught everyone’s attention too with his blistering pace and sleek play.
