When I saw the schedule for the Columbia Sister City trip to China, I realized I had visited most of the places on the trip, and didn’t need to go again. I started searching for an alternative.
I teach East Asian history at Howard Community College and have done a master’s degree in Chinese history. I found a very nice tour from China Senior Tours.
Cost is cost of the tour for single occupancy is $3599, including hotels, meals, private car, guide, domestic flight and entrance fees. It does not include international flights (about $1,000 to $1,200).
Here is the itinerary.
Oct 10 – Arrive in Xiamen city in Fujian. Minnan Hotel
Oct 11– Xiamen to Yongding traditional round earth buildings,a world heritage site. Jinteng Hotel
Oct 12 – Yongding to Ruijin town in Jiangxi Province, the capital of the Soviet Government before the Long March, visit former soviet government departments. Changting Old Town with ancient walls. Kanglaibo International Hotel (Ruijin Ouli)
Oct 13 – Ruijing to Ganzhou. Floating Bridge Yugutai and Bajingtai by Ganjiang River. Shanshui Hotel
Oct 14 – Ganzhou to Kaili. Kaili is the center of Miao (Meng) ethnic people in China, visit Miao village with Stilt houses and wind & Rain bridges. Ziquejie terraced fields, one of the biggest in China. Tenglong Hotel
Oct 15 – Kaili Miao(Meng) people’s village. Stone bridge village where local people making paper by hands. Dashizi Market. Tenglong Hotel
Oct 16– Kaili to Qingyan Old Town, the best preserved Song Dynasty city walls in South China. Regal Hotel
Oct 17 – Qingyan to Zhunyi where the Red Army had a very important meeting, made Chairman Mao the top leader of the communist party, an important step for Red Army during the Long March. Maotai old town famous for the best liqueur in China. Dongfang Hotel
Oct 18 – Zhunyi to Chishui town where the Red Army had many battles during the long march. Chishui is also a world heritage site, and a hometown of waterfall. Bingan old town and visit. Hailongtun Fort built in Ming Dynasty (1368-1644AD). Zhongyue Hotel
Oct 19 – Chishui to Zhaotong in Yunnan Provance which is famous for black necked cranes; Weixin town on the way. Weixin was the area where the Army reformed and became more powerful. Purple Light Hotel
Oct 20 – Zhaotong to Xichang. Xichang is one of the three important launching
centers of China, and also the center of Yi Minority people. Qionghai Lake where chief of Red Army formed an alliance with local chief of Yi people during the long march in 1935. Mingren Hotel
Oct 21 – Xichang to Hailuogou National Park on the foot of Gongga Mountain, the highest in Hengduanshan mountain system with the peak of 7556 meters. On the
way, visit the port at Dadu River ( a great tributary of Yangtze) where the Red Army had a famous battle for crossing the river. Hailuogou Long March Hotel
Oct 22 – Hailuogou National Park, see the glaciers on chairlifts. Hailuogou Long March Hotel
Oct 23 – Hailuogou to Ya’an. Ya’an was the place where people first found the giant pandas in 19th century. Shangli Old Town where we still see many Red Army’s slogans. Hongzhu Hotel
Oct 24 – Ya’an to Chengdu. City tour in the afternoon and Sichuan Opera in the
evening. Xinhua International Hotel
Oct 25 – In the morning visit Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Center, the biggest inChina with 80 pandas. Fly to Xi’an in the afternoon, take bullet train to Yan’an, where the Red Army finished the Long March. Wangjiaping old office of the Red Army and the museum. Zaoyuan. Yang jailing old residence of the Red Army. Zhongjiang Hotel
Oct 26 – Yan’an back to Xi’an and trip ends. (I cut a trip to terracotta warriors outside Xi’an since I had already been there twice, but this could be added, as well as trip to Beijing and/or Shanghai.)
