Native American tribes struggle for Md. recognition
Today is American Indian Heritage Day in Maryland, a new name for what just used to be just the day after Thanksgiving and a state holiday. There are more than 20,000 Native Americans living in Maryland, and there are eight indigenous tribes who form and operate communities.
Still, these indigenous tribes don’t have the economic and cultural benefits afforded to other Native American tribes that have obtained recognition.
