State Roundup, January 24, 2014

Gov. O’Malley delivers his final State of the State, summing up his last seven years in office and touting the need to bolster the middle class and raise the minimum wage; although the overall response during the speech was tepid, despite O’Malley’s soaring rhetoric, reaction afterward seemed to divide along party lines with Democrats mostly happy with it and Republicans not so much; environmental advocates use an amusing jingle to try to save the state’s stormwater fees from a legislative repeal; Sen. Edwards hopes to raise highway speed limit to 70 mph; AAA, legislators urges locals to audit their speed cameras; Gansler files for governor; and elections board members question ruling that allows Ulman to fund-raise in gubernatorial race during session.

Analysis: From the back corner, a solid speech that was mostly true

From my usual corner at the back of the House of Delegates chamber, Martin O’Malley’s eighth and final State of the State address seemed one of his better efforts.

Think what you might of O’Malley’s accomplishments over the last seven years — the real subject of the whole speech — the gov is an effective communicator, except when he reaches too far for the lofty rhetoric of his beloved Irish poets.
