State Roundup, January 8, 2014

A minimum wage hike seems to top everyone’s list of issues as the General Assembly gets under way today and Gov. O’Malley is no different: He says he’ll be focusing his energy on it during his last legislative session; state initiative could reduce commercial septic discharge; Maryland GOP to push for tax relief for small businesses; former Gov. Glendening warns of boring session, thanks to upcoming elections; U.S. Rep. Delaney continues to push against state health exchange; December casino take was lowest since Rocky Gap opened but still high; lawmakers conduct last-minute fund-raising before session starts; Gansler continues to press Brown over Ulman fund-raising ability; Craig makes it official and files in run for governor; and folks line up to replace Valerie Ervin on Montgomery Council.

$32 million spent on lobbying state, with health care industry at top

Over $32 million was spent last year lobbying state government, and the health care industry was the top spender at $7.1 million, according to State Ethics Commission reports. Not surprising in a year that saw the implementation of Obamacare, causing the further growth of state involvement in health care through Medicaid, 62 health care organizations spent $7.1 million on lobbying. The Maryland Hospital Association topped the list of firms at $665,000.
