State Roundup, November 18, 2013

State posts steep loss in manufacturing jobs; with less participation by special-ed students, state’s high reading scores apparently have been inflated; Arundel police credit state Violence Prevention Initiative for cutting violent crime; Afzali-Brinkley feud continues as delegate rejects offer of alternate seat from senator; former U.S. Rep. Helen Delich Bentley celebrated as 90th birthday nears; AFSCME backs Sen. Frosh for attorney general; gubernatorial hopeful Gansler constantly shadowed by Brown operative; Ulman to fund-raise during session since Brown cannot; Mizeur stumps at church; and reinstated Arundel councilman seeks to revive voters faith as he looks to the future.

How old is that Bentley? Cantankerous ex-congresswoman and champion of port turns 90

How old is that Bentley? Cantankerous ex-congresswoman and champion of port turns 90

How old is Helen Delich Bentley, the crotchety ex-congresswoman who could swear like the longshoremen she covered for years at the Port of Baltimore now named in her honor?

Turns out she’ll be 90 on Thanksgiving. Sunday, she was feted with a celebration and roast that brought out a distinguished crowd of aging congressional leaders, former governors and senators, has-beens and wannabes along with hundreds of old friends to the Museum of Industry on the Inner Harbor waterfront.
