Mooney won’t challenge Bartlett in GOP primary, but Afzali will

In two more surprises in the race for the redrawn 6th Congressional District, state GOP Chairman Alex Mooney said Tuesday he won’t challenge Republican Congressman Roscoe Bartlett, but freshman Del. Kathy Afzali of Frederick said she will, pitting her against the state senator from her own district, David Brinkley.

Muse protests endorsements at Democratic unity luncheon

As the annual Maryland Democratic Party luncheon before the legislative session broke up Tuesday, state Sen. Anthony Muse took the podium to loudly protest the endorsement of incumbent U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin by Gov. Martin O’Malley and U.S. Rep. Steny Hoyer, the House minority whip. “We don’t use this kind of venue to endorse one Democrat over another,” bellowed Muse, who had just filed that morning to run against Cardin in the primary.

State Roundup, January 10, 2012

O’Malley to propose $350 million for public school construction; Ocean Downs Casino sees no profit in 2011; death penalty opponents to renew push in Annapolis; state recognizes Piscataways, first time Maryland has honored Native group; Mooney to announce decision on running for Bartlett’s seat; some in GOP see Cardin as vulnerable; and feds put damper on Prince George’s hopes for FBI facility.

Republicans see Sen. Cardin as vulnerable

U.S. Senator Ben Cardin’s re-election may not be the typical cake walk Maryland Democrats have grown to expect, some Republicans believe. Cardin already faces a primary challenge from eight Democrats, including state Sen. Anthony Muse, a well-known African American pastor from Prince George’s County with close ties throughout the politically potent black churches. One of Cardin’s Republican challengers could be former Iraq War veteran and U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee Counsel, Richard J. Douglas.
