The state Senate is set to vote today to approve Gov. Martin O’Malley’s congressional redistricting plan after rejecting a Republican alternative Monday night.
The governor’s plan puts almost a third of Marylanders into new congressional districts, and increases the number of Democratic voters in the 6th Congressional District.
Gov. Martin O’Malley said he would support higher taxes for transportation to spend on infrastructure projects and create construction jobs.
O’Malley also said at a news conference that he has also ordered a 60-day review of all state regulations to identify “any regulations that we can eliminate to spark faster job creation.”
The special session of the General Assembly opens today and while redistricting is the main issue, wind energy, transportation and the budget shortfall will be discussed at briefings; O’Malley releases his map proposal and it looks not much different from his panel’s; both are drawing the ire of lawmakers and citizens alike; Bartlett, whose district is imperiled by the maps, raised little in campaign funds; Cardin has a huge haul and Bongino, his potential rival, brings in little; and the defense is set to start in state Sen. Currie’s trial.
