Listen to this articlePHOENIX — Capitolbeat, the national Association of Capitol Reporters and Editors, honored MarylandReporter.com’s coverage of state government with two awards Saturday at the close of its annual conference in the Arizona capital.
MarylandReporter.com editor Len Lazarick won the first place Cappie award for coverage in the online news category of the Excellence in State House Reporting contest for what the judges called his “solid body of beat reporting.”
The judges also gave Lazarick a third place award for news analysis for his articles on General Assembly compensation.
Dozens of other news organizations from around the country were also honored for their State House coverage.
The association was formed 11 years ago by a group of reporters and news organizations concerned about the diminishing coverage of state government. According to its mission statement, the association “exists to advance public understanding of state government and the issues before state government, and to educate and share information with its members and the public on best practices, tools and techniques in state government reporting.”
On Nov. 2, MarylandReporter.com celebrated its first full year of publishing original stories and a daily roundup of news about state government and politics from dozens of Maryland news outlets. It is an independent 501(c)(3) tax exempt corporation supported by foundations, sponsors, individual donors, advertising and customized writing for other news organizations.
In June, the Washington, D.C., chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists also honored MarylandReporter.com, giving the online news organization first and second place in its new “blog” category.
