Development at Owings Mills Metro station resumes after three-year delay

The development of the Owings Mills Metro station is resuming after a three-year-long delay. The dispute that halted work on the projected $220-million transit-oriented development has been resolved, said Don Mohler, spokesman for Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith. Ground-breaking is expected this spring.

Gov. Martin O’Malley has been pushing for transit-oriented development, and in June, he designated 14 metro stations in the state for intense development. The only site in Baltimore County is Owings Mills.

Veterans Benson and Exum battle for 24th District Senate seat

Del. Joanne Benson and Sen. Nathaniel Exum have together spent a total of 55 years in Annapolis serving District 24 in Prince George’s County.

Now, the two Democratic veterans are going head-to-head to be the next senator for a district that straddles the Washington Beltway from Seat Pleasant to Glenarden.

Race to the Top reforms won’t be easy to implement, particularly teacher evaluations

The federal education department gave Maryland a $250 million grant Tuesday to implement school reforms designed to improve the performance of both students and teachers.

But a testy exchange between school superintendents and representatives of the teachers union on Saturday showed that actually putting the changes in place may be contentious and difficult to achieve, particularly new standards for evaluating teachers.
