After 48 years in Annapolis, Stone is hoping for another Senate term

In 1960, Norman Stone was so inspired by a young politician named John F. Kennedy that he worked on Kennedy’s campaign. In 1962, when a judge ruled that Maryland needed more members of the House of Delegates to accurately represent the people of the state, Stone threw his hat in the ring to fill one of the new seats.

The Dundalk Democrat from District 6 has been in Annapolis ever since – nearly a half century — and is the longest serving member of the legislature.

Veteran legislators: Long-time lawmakers say there’s still much to do

They’re 70 years old and older, they’ve served two decades or more in the Maryland General Assembly, and they’re not about to retire.

In fact, while we’ve written about a few delegates and senators who are not seeking re-election, they are more the exception than the rule.

The longest-serving veterans are hanging in there, and today we start a series of profiles about several of them.

The tax returns released by ex-Gov. Bob Ehrlich and current Gov. Martin O’Malley over the weekend showed that Ehrlich was a man of his word, as the O’Malley radio ad portrayed: “We made money, for us, a lot of money.”

Harrington, Ramirez contest experience, leadership style in District 47 Senate race

Both Sen. David Harrington and Del. Victor Ramirez feel that the next senator representing the 47th District should be someone who fights for the issues constituents of the Prince George’s County district hold dear.

The two Democrats, however, feel very differently about who is the best person to stand up for those residents in their constituency which hugs the District of Columbia line from Montgomery County to Cheverly.

Development at Owings Mills Metro station resumes after three-year delay

The development of the Owings Mills Metro station is resuming after a three-year-long delay. The dispute that halted work on the projected $220-million transit-oriented development has been resolved, said Don Mohler, spokesman for Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith. Ground-breaking is expected this spring.

Gov. Martin O’Malley has been pushing for transit-oriented development, and in June, he designated 14 metro stations in the state for intense development. The only site in Baltimore County is Owings Mills.
